Study objectivesThe provision of a programme of occupational therapy intervention for older people with dementia in a care home setting will improve the quality of life score by three points when measured using the Quality of Life in Alzheimer's Disease - patient and caregiver report (QOL-AD) compared to a control group.

InterventionSeries of seven education sessions provided by registered occupational therapist to group of care staff covering the need for occupation, how to get to know the resident and how to select/offer personally meaningful activities. Staff will complete a series of work-based learning tasks in between the sessions.

Key inclusion criteriaCare homes residents need to be:
1. Aged 60 and over
2. Have lived at the care home for at least two months on a permanent basis
3. Fulfill the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria for dementia
4. Score less than 24 on the Mini Mental Status Examination (MMSE)
5. Able to consent/assent to participate in the trial
Key exclusion criteriaResidents with primarily a mental health diagnosis or learning disability.
