Scientific titleAn analysis of the effect of photographic intervention on medical dialogue within pain consultations: an exploration of photographic portraiture with patients and clinicians from oral and dental medicine
Study acronymFace2face
Study objectivesFollowing the success of previous work by the investigators (and colleagues) into the usefulness of developing a visual language for pain, this research will investigate in greater depth the effect of photographic intervention into doctor-patient dialogue. It will also investigate the implications of the difficulty for facial pain patients of expressing and communicating pain using the normal canvas - i.e., the face - when the face itself is so frequently unable to communicate pain because of its own pain. The resultant schism in communication with the other will be explored through an exploration of photographic portraiture in a variety of ways. The results will be exhibited in hospital and public gallery spaces and disseminated within professional journals, patient support networks and journals, student teaching and via lectures at professional conferences and public forums. The project is made up of three main strands.
