Scientific title
Study objectivesWhat is the estimated improvement (effect size) in skill and knowledge of Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator use, which can be expected with comparable mental health care (MHC) professionals completing a similar programme of face-to-face or e-learning based instruction?
Ethics approval(s)Added 29 July 2008: Ethics approval was received from the local medical ethics committee before trial recruitment began.
Health condition(s) or problem(s) studiedNot Applicable: Resuscitation
InterventionPilot RCT. Staff randomised to:
[A] Experimental e-technology education in basic life-support (BLS) with automated external defibrillator (AED) use.
[B] Traditional face-to-face nationally approved training in basic life support (BLS) with automated external defibrillator (AED) use.
Intervention typeOther
Primary outcome measureMeasure of the effect size between online learning and face-to-face groups on an outcome criteria of 32% passing knowledge and 35% passing skills tests in BLS and AED use.
