InterventionIntervention A:
Standard social work support service, plus 10 weekly sessions of a manualised home based cognitive behavioural intervention to enhance parenting.

Intervention B:
Standard social work support service, plus 10 weekly sessions of a manualised home based educational programme on child maltreatment and its consequences.

Intervention C:
Standard social work support service, plus Intervention A or B after nine months (when follow up extra interventions completed).

Primary outcome measureStrengths and difficulties questionnaires (SDQ) and impact supplement. Outcomes were measured immediately post-intervention and again 6 months later.

Key exclusion criteria1. Placed children who have major physical or learning difficulties
2. Placed children not showing sufficient difficulties to warrant the intervention
