Study objectives | To list the clinical and cost-effectiveness of early post-placement intervention with adoptive parents looking after children placed from care. Please note as of 03/12/2008 this record was updated to include the extention to the anticipated end date. This trial was initially planned to finish on the 31st March 2007. |

Intervention | Intervention A: Standard social work support service, plus 10 weekly sessions of a manualised home based cognitive behavioural intervention to enhance parenting. Intervention B: Standard social work support service, plus 10 weekly sessions of a manualised home based educational programme on child maltreatment and its consequences. Intervention C: Standard social work support service, plus Intervention A or B after nine months (when follow up extra interventions completed). |

Primary outcome measure | Strengths and difficulties questionnaires (SDQ) and impact supplement. Outcomes were measured immediately post-intervention and again 6 months later. |
Secondary outcome measures | 1. Adoption problem check list 2. User satisfaction 3. Intervention-based assessment of parenting change 4. Daily hassles 5. Expression of feelings questionnaire 6. Teacher ratings of SDQ Outcomes were measured immediately post-intervention and again 6 months later. |

Key inclusion criteria | Families who, within the past year, have had a child placed for adoption from local authority care. |
Key exclusion criteria | 1. Placed children who have major physical or learning difficulties 2. Placed children not showing sufficient difficulties to warrant the intervention 3. Foster families becoming adopters |
