Plain English summary of protocol
Background and study aims
In previous in-vitro studies, the product showed high iron bioaccessibility (95.99%) after simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and near-complete transepithelial iron permeation (98.87 ± 4.39%) after 4 hours in a validated intestinal cell model. The product also demonstrated good intestinal tolerability across a wide range of tested concentrations, along with antioxidant properties that may help reduce oxidative stress related to iron supplementation. These preclinical data provide a rationale for the clinical investigation as a well-tolerated and highly bioavailable oral iron formulation.
The aim of the study is to evaluate the bioavailability (i.e., the amount of iron that reaches the bloodstream) of a new iron-based dietary supplement formulation after single and multiple oral administration.
The study will also assess the safety and tolerability of the investigational product, as well as participants’ satisfaction with its intake.
Who can participate?
Healthy adult women, aged 18-60 years old inclusive, and those with mild iron deficiency .
What does the study involve?
The investigational product (i.e., one capsule of Monurelle® Ferro Naturale) will be administered once a day for 3 consecutive days. The investigational product will be orally administered in the morning, at 08:00±1 h, under fasting conditions, from Day 1 to Day 3. It will be swallowed (without chewing) by study participants with 150 mL of still mineral water at room temperature.
What are the possible benefits and risks of participating?
Participation in the study is not expected to provide any direct benefit; however, it may contribute to generating additional information on the investigational product that could be useful for future patients. Participants may indirectly benefit from the medical assessments performed free of charge during the course of the study. This is the first clinical study of this new iron formulation; therefore, specific safety and tolerability data in humans are not yet available. However, oral iron supplements are generally well tolerated when taken at appropriate doses. Given the low dosage administered in this study (30 mg once daily for three consecutive days), no particular risks are expected. Possible side effects may include metallic taste, gastrointestinal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Where is the study run from?
The study was conducted at the CROSS Research S.A. Phase I Unit Clinical Centre, in Arzo (Switzerland)
When is the study starting and how long is it expected to run for?
February 2026 to May 2026
