Scientific title
Study objectivesThe aim of this investigation is to establish whether showing patients images of their own atherosclerotic arteries will motivate change in the patient's thoughts regarding their smoking habits. Do patients feel more motivated to stop smoking when they are visually confronted with the concrete damage that their smoking has incurred?

InterventionVascular outpatients are randomly allocated to either be shown a picture of their own damaged arteries, an index of vascular disease and a picture of a healthy artery or a control group without this intervention. Questionnaires regarding the patients intention to stop smoking will be completed by both groups.

Key inclusion criteriaAdult smokers (at least 1 cigarette per day) attending an outpatient vascular clinic at Guy's Hospital.
Key exclusion criteria1. Inability to give informed consent
2. Understand the questionnaire or the nature of the ultrasound
